After an unexpected rent increase, our Veteran could no longer afford his apartment while living on a fixed Social Security income. Hoping to avoid homelessness, he temporarily moved in with a family member — but when financial expectations couldn’t be met immediately, the arrangement quickly fell apart. With nowhere safe to go, our Veteran spent nearly two weeks sleeping outdoors near a cemetery, doing his best to stay hopeful while searching for help.
He was eventually referred to the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Program through FHLC, Inc., where emergency hotel placement was arranged to ensure his immediate safety. During this time, he met Program Manager Sonya Powell, who coordinated his admission into Stand Down House (SDH). SDH staff provided transportation to the program, where our Veteran remained for nearly four months while working toward permanent housing and long‑term stability.
When he entered Stand Down House, our Veteran was facing multiple barriers: homelessness, limited financial resources, and ongoing medical concerns related to a stroke he suffered in 2023. Through a collaborative effort involving Stand Down House, the Department of Veterans Affairs, HUD‑VASH, the Housing Authority, FHLC’s SSVF Program, and SDH Case Management, he actively engaged in services designed to rebuild his independence and restore his confidence.
During his stay, our Veteran made remarkable progress. He secured a HUD‑VASH voucher, found permanent housing, strengthened his VA benefits claim, and rebuilt his financial stability — all while working daily toward greater independence. By the time he graduated from Stand Down House, he had the tools, support systems, and confidence needed to maintain long‑term housing stability.
At discharge, our Veteran expressed deep gratitude for the support he received throughout his journey. He shared:
“If you want to do the right thing, this is the place to do it and come out better.”
His success is a powerful reminder of what coordinated community partnerships — and a Veteran’s determination — can achieve: dignity, stability, and hope for the future.
