Stand Down takes this moment to honor those who have served our country and those who continue to serve near and far. Moreover, we honor those who recently lost their lives in the line of duty in Afghanistan.
Military service in a war zone demonstrates braveness and boldness that is unparalleled. Regardless of one’s military job, skills or responsibilities, everyone in a war zone is always at risk. We can never know how close danger really is or where deadly force lurks when we are exposed to the local population, which is the reason why we serve in foreign nations, to make that human connection around the world.
United States Servicemembers who serve our country participate in service greater than ourselves. No one serves looking for or expecting death. However, Servicemembers are always exposed to many risks and dangers in a war zone in service to our nation, regardless of the well training and experience.
The thirteen Servicemembers who lost their lives in Afghanistan were doing their jobs. They were serving their country doing what they were asked to do. We honor their exemplary service, their extraordinary lives, Stand Down Salutes and Honors Our Heroes We Will Never Forget Your Sacrifice and their ultimate sacrifice. We pray for the families and loved ones who have experienced this great loss.
As a nation, we have witnessed how those who are still in country have continued to complete their mission and work in the face of danger and the ever-present threat of deadly force. Furthermore, we have also witnessed the testament of fortitude and shear resilience of all those who serve our great country.
These Veterans are the people who return home after wartime and peace time service. These Veterans are a part of our neighborhoods and our communities. We love our Veterans, who generation after generation, have been the very fabric of our society.
This is the reason why Stand Down works tirelessly to support and recognize our Veterans in their times of needs but also in their times of well-being. We must continue to make the connection and keep a continuous link with our Veterans and their families.
